I spent far too much time breaking down the brackets in all four divisions these past couple nights. Here's a look at what I came up with. As always, your thoughts are welcomed. Though, remember, these predictions are just that, predictions, not personal attacks on anyone. I've been known to be spot on at times, and off as well.

My thoughts
Division 1 can be a crapshoot. So much talent. So deep. It's hard to predict. Grosse Pointe South is the best team - top to bottom - in the field. The Blue Devils are as deep as they come. Clarkston is as talented as they come. So it's an interesting tournament, to say the least. If Clarkston maximizes its opportunities, it can win its second title in four years. Singles will do its part once again. And as much as I'd like to say the doubles lineup is the key - which it is A key - having the singles lineup perform beyond expectations is just as important. The No. 1 singles draw is loaded. Mollie Fox (Bloomfield Hills) and Paige Cooley (TC Central) in a quarterfinal is intriguing. Lexi Baylis will be awaiting the winner. On the bottom half of the draw, Utica's Davina Nguyen, who won this flight two years ago, will be playing the winner of Christina Jordan (West Bloomfield) and Raven Neeley (GPS). That pairing is another great quarter. The winner better get her rest before Saturday morning.

My thoughts  
If you went by the seeds alone, Seaholm would walk away with its second title in three years. The Maples are everyone's favorites heading in. To combat the pressure, coach Scott Ransome has downplayed that fact. Marian has won two championships in the past four years and Forest Hills Northern has won eight championships since 2002. That's what I'd be telling my team if it was a favorite heading into this weekend. All three teams will be ready to play - that's for sure. My projections show a much closer chase for the championship. The difference very well may be Seaholm's balance from top to bottom. It's got the best player in the tournament, as well as the best 3-4 doubles teams. Can the rest of the Maples' singles lineup step it up and score the way the rest of the state expect them to? We shall see. I've got Seaholm advancing to the semifinals in all eight flights. And I've got Forest Hills Northern and Marian advancing in seven. That very well might be the difference.

My thoughts
About a week before regionals, I was certain about two things as the state tournament approached: Cranbrook was sure of a fourth straight Division 3 state championship; and senior Alex Najarian would finish her high school career as an unbeaten, four-time state champion herself. Three weeks later, I feel those same two things will happen. But after finding out Williamston's Sara Daavettila, a Blue Chip sophomore, is in the draw, it made things very much more interesting. Daavettila is the real deal. She and Najarian played twice out of season last June. Najarian won both times, but needed three sets the second time. Since then, Daavettila is 33-2 playing some of the top USTA competition in the country. If I wasn't committed to attending the Division 1 finals in Midland, I would be in Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon, watching that match. It's clearly the match of the season - for all of high school tennis in Michigan. As for the team, Cranbrook is clearly the team to beat and I think the Cranes will win championships at all six flights they are seed #1 at. Ann Short is a lock at 2-singles. And Cranbrook's doubles lineup is stacked. Country Day's Madelyn Karoub is a lock at No. 3 singles as well.

My thoughts 
Well, for the first time in three years, there will be a team other than Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart winning the Division 4 state title. The Gazelles are a good team. But Grosse Ile is a great team. The Red Devils finished runner-up to Sacred Heart last year. This season, they are a very deep team. I've predicted them to reach six flight championships, winning three. They will pull away from the field - take it to the bank. Sacred Heart is seeded at six flights. That's enough to keep the team in contention after Day 1. If the team can outperform expectations - many of those seeds are 3-4-5-6 - they can push for a top-3 finish. It's been a remarkable run for coach Judy Hehs' bunch.

For most of Oakland County's contingent at the Super Nationals in Kalamazoo (boys) and San Diego (girls), the end has come. But for Michael Dube' and Jack Murray, the beat goes on. Here's a look at how most finished, and how Dube' and Murray are still doing as the tournament nears its conclusion.

Boys 16

• Tim Wang finished 1-2, dropping his third-round match in the back draw to the 16th seed, Alfredo Perez.
• Connor Johnston finished 2-2 (including a walk-over win). He fell in his 3Q match to Brandon Yeoh.

Boys 18

• Michael Dube' dropped his first match of the tournament, 6-1, 6-0, to Collin Altamirano, in the round of 32. 
• Max Fliegner finished the week 1-2, falling out of the tournament with a loss to the 19th seed, William Little.
• Brett Forman also met his fate in the third round qualifier of the back draw, falling to Shane Monroe to finish 1-2 for the tournament.
• Jack Murray continues to plug away in the back draw, as he defeated Justin Fields, Christian Garay and Trey Daniel to move on to the fourth round.

Girls 16

• Sophia Abelson finished 1-2 for the week.
• Dominique Vasile won her first two matches before dropping her last two, to finish 1-2 in San Diego.
• Christina Jordan bowed out of the tournament with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss to Elizabeth Tedford. She finished 3-2

Girls 18

• Alexandria Najarian wrapped up the week 1-2.
• Lexi Baylis finished 0-2.

Amazing to see the talent spewing from the Super National draws this week. Some of Michigan's best players - many of which reside here in Oakland County - have already been relegated to the back draw. Ed Covalschi, last year's Division 1 state champion, is out. The D1 runnerup and 2011 state champion Tyler Gardiner, is not even in Kalamazoo. Brett Forman, the 2010 state champ, is still alive, in the back draw.
Over on the girls side, Alexandria Najarian, widely considered the best high school player in the state - including by myself - dropped her first match in San Diego. The D1 champion, Mary Hanna - not here - and the runner-up, Lexi Baylis, lost her first match of the tournament. No Oakland County players are seeded. So there are no easy draws.
But most of the area players are still alive, battling it out in the back draw. Here's the latest. I will update this as information comes in.

Boys 16 

• Tim Wang battled back from a first-round loss to pick up a win in the back draw. His next match will be against the 16-seed, Alfredo Perez, in the third round.
• Connor Johnston, who opened the tournament with a win before losing his second match, advanced to the third round in the back draw thanks to a walk-over. He'll next face Brandon Yeoh.

 Boys 18

• Michael Dube' continued his stellar play, picking up his third-straight win, the last a three-setter over John Zordani, to reach the round of 32.
• Max Fliegner moved on to the third round of the back draw, where he'll take on William Little, the 19th seed, who dropped his opening match as well.
• Jack Murray also advanced in the back draw, winning his second-round match to move on to face Justin Fields in the third round.
• Brett Forman joined Fliegner and Murray in winning Tuesday. He will take on Shane Monroe in his next match in the back draw.

Girls 16

• Christina Jordan came back strong, winning her last two matches in the back draw to reach the third round. She now gets Elizabeth Tedford in her next match.
• Dominique Vasile, after winning her first two matches, fell to the No. 1 seed, Ena Shibahara, in straight sets.
• Sophia Abelson dropped her third-round match to the 11-seed, Jessica Failla.

Girls 18

• Alexandria Najarian won her second match, but fell in her third, ending her tournament.
• Baylis lost to Raquel Pedraza to end her national run.

Bear with me, coming off a vacation I'm a little behind the eight ball. But the USTA Nationals (aka Super Nationals) have begun. The Boys 16 and 18 tournament is being held in Kalamazoo, while the Girls 16 and 18 is being held in San Diego. They opened up play this weekend. Some of the early results are in. This tournament is as big as they come.

Within three weeks of the high school season finishing up, a slew of the county's best girls (and boys) will be competing in their second big USTA tournament this weekend in Indianapolis.

Now, I do not intend on exposing those picks here for the sake of the players, but I do intend on letting everyone know of my team predictions, as well as each my projected championship matches this weekend.

DIVISION 1

Thoughts: Clarkston has the most talent at the tournament. Grosse Pointe South has the most depth. Port Huron Northern has the most balanced lineup. So who wins the title? As is the case in any sport where your last starter is as important as your first, I like South's chances to repeat. I've got the Blue Devils scoring at all flights, reaching the semifinals at six and winning 3-4 doubles. If this were a five-flight tournament, Clarkston wins running away. But the Wolves — if they want a chance at winning their second title in three years — will have to score more than the three points I see them getting out of their 2-3-4 doubles teams. If they can, then they have a shot. If PHN can score some points at 4-doubles, they have a chance as well. Mercy is a wild card. The Marlins are balanced, much like GPS, but may not be able to score enough points on Day 2 to make a push for a title.They may prove to be a spoiler to one or more of the top contending teams (see also, Troy, whose doubles teams are scary). I picked against Spindler-Pendelton (part 4) at 2-singles, though if it happened, it would be a great match. My best bet to win a state title: Paige Olsen and Alex Whall at 1-dubs. They've beaten everyone this year — including the two teams I've picked to win state titles in divisions 2-3. And they've beaten them each twice.

Thoughts: Boy, where to begin. I've gone back and forth on who I think will win. And I would not be surprised one bit if Seaholm picks up an extra win or two, or Marian drops a match I did not predict, and the Maples win by a point. But as it stands, I just like Marian's draws much better. Seven seeds, none lower than a 3, including six 1 or 2 seeds, means the Mustangs should reach Day 2 in all seven. That's 21 points right there. I believe that where each team has an advantage over the other, seeding has come into play. Seaholm has tough draws at 2-singles and 3-doubles. Marian has great draws at those flights. Andover also has seven seeds, but four of them are 4-5 seeds, meaning they'll run into the 1-seed at those flights. The Barons should make their presence felt, but it would be tough for them to challenge the Maples and Mustangs. This, if it happens, will be the final match between Kerry Hu (Andover) and Mollie Fox (Lahser), as high school opponents. They are on track to face each other in the semifinals. Fox is the 1-seed, Hu the 4. They'll be teammates next year. Lahser has a good chance to finish in the top-10. The Knights will also play a key role in the head-to-head battle between Seaholm and Marian. Fox faces Marian's Elaine Apaza in the second round, while 2-seeded Meryl Reams is on the same half of the 4-singles draw as Seaholm's Rachel Fenberg. If she advances past Fenberg (or Forest Hills Northern's Sidney Whitfield), she may very well face Marian's Catherine Yaldoo in the final.

Thoughts: Yes, I predicted Cranbrook to sweep the finals. I tried to talk myself out of it. I tried to find a chink in the Cranes' armor, but I couldn't. Alexandria Najarian is the best player in the state. Anna Short and Allison Motea have proven to be the best 2-3 singles combination in the state. Sarah Lipworth is a seasoned veteran playing 4-singles. The only possible threat — in my opinion — is Country Day's Madelyn Karoub at 2-singles. She's a smart player. But Short is the favorite. The seeding committee did what they could to derail a Cranbrook sweep of #1 seeds. Allegan is the 1-seed at #1 doubles, with Country Day's Jane Ziecik and Ellie Miller holding down the 2-seed. Cranbrook's Alissa Rowens and Meg Phyle are at #3. Talk about fuel. And at #2, the Cranes' Kendra Sweet and Christina Roualet are the 2-seed, behind Allegan. No losses, just a couple scores against common opponents  taken into consideration. Look for Cranbrook to win at 1-2 doubles. And their 3-4 doubles (Briana Letica-Holly Meers and Lauren Lanzon and Emily Harvey) are pretty much a lock to win state titles. So in the end, yes, I see a sweep on the horizon.

Thoughts: Sacred Heart is a perfect definition of a deep team. There is talent from top to bottom. And that bodes well in Division 4. The Gazelles are favored in 2-3-4 doubles, earning the top seed at each flight. If you look at some of their tournament results from the regular season —- particularly those against D4's other top teams — you'll see why. Sarah Spangler and Heidi Lemon (2-dubs) Kendall Lehmann and Hannah Gerard (3-dubs) and Elia Wilson and Gretchen Lemon (4-dubs) dominated the competition within the division. I see them all picking up state championships on Saturday in Kalamazoo. I also predicted a doubles sweep for Sacred Heart — with Kelsey Nagle and Emily Nash avenging an earlier-season loss to Williamston's Delaney Nikolai and Caitlin Chick in the finals. And don't think all the talent lies in doubles. The Gazelles' doubles lineup will put the team in a position to win a second straight state title, but Tyler Papazian, Abby Hildebrand, Teresa Walawender and Tate Lehmann will prove to be the difference.

When I opened up the state tennis draws this afternoon, my mind immediately began to go to work. Oakland County received 61 seeds in the four divisions, including 19 top-seeds (of the 32 awarded).
Though I plan on breaking down the draws and making my predictions next week, here are some early observations after glancing up and down the draws:

Division 1

• Not excited for Clarkston that Lexi Baylis and Utica's Davina Nguyen are the 2-3 seeds in the No. 1 singles draw. In my honest opinion, this potential semifinal matchup should be the state final. No disrespect to top-seeded Mary Hanna (who earned the top seed with a three-set win over Baylis a few weeks back), but Nguyen - the defending state champion - should be on the top-line. BUT, because of this, we have two potential tremendous semifinal matchups, as Hanna may now have to face West Bloomfield's Raven Neely in the top half of the draw. Neely is playing well right now. Upset alert?
• Clarkston's Isabella Spindler earned the top-seed at No. 2 singles, where she's on a collision course to meet West Bloomfield's Aerielle Pendleton (#2) in the finals. Spindler beat Pendelton in the dual, Pendleton won in the OAA Red finals, while Spindler won the rubber match at the regional last week.
• Farmington Hills Mercy grabbed more seeds (6) than any county team. Jessie Guindi (#2) at No. 4 singles leads the way. The potential is there for the Marlins to surprise some people. A couple upsets and they could find their way into the top-3.
• Clarkston is currently ranked No. 2 in Division 1 - behind Port Huron Northern. For the Wolves to have a chance at winning a second state title in three years, three things have to happen. 1) Their big guns must come to play. Baylis, Spindler, Dana Olsen, and the No. 1 doubles team of Paige Olsen and Alex Whall have the potential to score 16-19 points. 2) The other four flights must do their part. Katie Hubregsen earned the No. 5 seed at 4-singles. She has the potential to really help her team score a few big points. Nos. 2-3-4 doubles all have an opportunity to score. They must. 3) And finally, the team will need help from others to deny PHN and Grosse Pointe North points. Funny enough, some of Clarkston's rivals (Mercy, Troy and West Bloomfield) are in a position to do so, at 2-3 singles and 1-3-4 doubles.

Division 2

• Marian and Seaholm are seeded right where they need to be to bring home a second-straight D2 state championship to Oakland County. Each received seven seeds. Each received three top seeds. But I think Marian has the slight edge when you break down all the flights. The Mustangs have a distinct advantage at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles. Yes, Seaholm (Labina Petrovska) got the 3-seed at No. 1 singles, and I don't like unseeded Elaine Apaza's draw - Lahser's Mollie Fox (#1) - in the second round, but Petrovska drew defending state champion Abby Perkins of Mason in her quarter of the draw. That's a huge match for the Maples now. Huge. 
• The state did a nice job - unintentionally of course - of splitting up Seaholm and Marian in the draws. They are on the opposite sides of the draw at all eight flights. So each has a fighting chance to make their way through the brackets - void of each other.
• Andover did very well for itself, garnering seven seeds. Shouldn't come as a suprise. The Barons are ranked No. 4. It's just easy to forget them when you've got Seaholm and Marian competing less than five miles down the road.
• Intriguing draw at No. 1 singles. Fox is the top-seed, as warranted with a 21-2 record this year - both losses coming to Baylis in OAA Red play. She's on course to face future teammate Kerry Hu (Andover) in the semifinals. If she can beat her rival, she'll face the winner of Petrovska, Perkins or Richland Gull Lake's Sara Remynse, the No. 1 ranked senior in the state (Tennisrecruiting.com).

Division 3

•  When freshmen Anna Short and Allison Motea decided to make Cranbrook their home this past fall, it kind of took the fun out of Division 3. The only question is whether the Cranes can sweep all flight championships. They're top seeds at all singles flights - with Alex Najarian leading the way at No. 1. Their 3-4 doubles teams are No. 1 seeds as well. Something tells me Alissa Rowens and Meg Phyle (#3 at No. 1 doubles) and Kendra Sweet and Christina Roualet (#2 at No. 2 doubles) have something to prove in Holland.
• Country Day is ranked No. 2 in the division, but will have to play well if it hopes to finish that high. Forest Hills Eastern and Allegan are seeded well and any of the three could finish 2-3-4. Country Day's singles (Marina Selenica, Madelyn Karoub, Haley Mullins and Sarah Carroll must all score well.

Division 4

• Much like Cranbrook in Division 3, Sacred Heart is the favorite to win a second-straight Division 4 state championship. The Gazelles are positioned well - four top seeds, including three in doubles. Their depth is key. They won three of the four doubles championships this year. They have a chance to sweep in 2013. But coaches Judy Hehs and Jim Slaughter are not taking anything for granted.
• Grosse Ile - ranked No. 2 - is the wild card. Not much is known about it, which concerns Hehs and Slaughter. Sacred Heart's Tyler Papazian and Grosse Ile's Mary-Kate Mcshane will square off in a first-round matchup at No. 1 singles. Guess both schools will learn a lot about each other right away. Seed-wise, these two schools seem to be the teams to beat.

I will have predictions - and may add to this particular blog after talking to a coach or two - coming up, so check back often.

Clarkston celebrates its Division 1 regional title Friday.

Friday proved to be a little cooler on the courts - what a relief - but we had another handful of teams qualify on to the state finals in a couple weeks. In what was an awesome display of tennis at a few different sites, both the Division 1 regional at Rochester and the Division 2 regional at North Farmington seemed to top them all.
I was out at Rochester, where I saw one of the best matches of the season. Lexi Baylis and Raven Neely played a three-set nail-biter, with Baylis breaking twice at the end of her 7-5 third set victory. If people did not know Neely was a real threat before, they do now. Both players gave everyone a real show on Friday and should be top-four seeds at the Division 1 tournament.
As a team, Clarkston looked really solid, reaching the finals at all eight flights. Everyone scored three or more points for the team. They'll need a similar effort (consistency) in Midland. Mercy showed that it has one of the more balanced teams in Division 1. Its doubles teams are going to score at the finals. If the Marlins can score well in singles, a top-five finish is right there.
I always like to see three teams make it out of  a tough regional like the ones in Rochester and Farmington Hills. West Bloomfield showed it has the horses at a few flights to score some points at states. Though ranked 10th in the state, I think the Lakers will better that at states.
One thing that did not work out at Rochester on Friday was the fact that Adams' #1 Halle Hyman will not be playing at states. She lost to Neely in the semifinals. She's a player who most likely would have been a top-six seed. But we will now not get a chance to see her play. That's one of the unfortunate rules of tennis. Not all the best players make it to states.
But all the best talent playing at North Farmington on Friday will be in Holly. Andover reached the finals at all eight flights and easily won a very competitive D2 regional. That'll bode well for the Barons. I think they'll receive their fair share of 3-4-5 seeds at the finals and score well.
North Farmington and Lahser will also be traveling up I-75. They showed they had the depth to earn their way to Holly. Mollie Fox (Lahser) wrapped up her 1-seed at #1 singles and North's No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Tobin and Maria Vicini made a strong case for a deserved 4-5-6 seed at a loaded flight at states.
Novi made it out of its own D1 regional on Friday. Northville swept the region - the only local region that was swept this week - with the Wildcats finishing runnerup. They used their depth in doubles to secure their place in Midland. It was unfortunate for Brighton, which finished a point shy of qualifying. The Bulldogs' 2-3 singles each reached the finals, but Lakeland's Danielle Mathiesen proved to be the spoiler, knocking Brighton's #1 out in the quarterfinals, denying them of a critical point.
And what about Sacred Heart. I left the best for last. Near perfection for the Gazelles. Seven flight champions. The team set itself up well for a run at its second-straight state championship. Its depth will once again be the difference. The team has talent from top to bottom and has faced some of the best Division 2 and 3 competition in the state this season. So moving on to Kalamazoo should prove to be no problem.

So now that all regionals have been played, we have 15 schools moving on to states, plus one individual. Congrats to Cranbrook, Country Day, Seaholm, Marian, Troy, Troy Athens, Holly, Andover, North Farmington, Lahser, Clarkston, Mercy, West Bloomfield, Novi, Sacred Heart and Everest Collegiate's Carly Sutkiewicz.
