A look at the 2013 Individual Wrestling Finals

So the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals is about to start. The kids have been preparing for this moment since their last match of 2012. It's the single biggest wrestling tournament in the country. And if you've ever been to The Palace for the three-day tournament, you'd be in awe. Oakland County has 71 wrestlers competing this season, down from the 79 it had last year. Below is a quick look at the tournament - as it pertains to the Oakland County contingent.

Team with the most individual qualifiers: Detroit Catholic Central, with 12

Returning state champions: Anthony Gonzales, Holly; Ken Bade, Catholic Central; Drew Garcia, Catholic Central

Returning state finalists: Malik Amine, Catholic Central; Mason Cleaver, Holly

Best bet to win a state championship: Drew Garcia, Catholic Central - He's the county's lone unbeaten wrestler (48-0). And that says a lot considering the Shamrocks insanely tough schedule this year. His biggest challenges at 171 would come in the semis against Grand Haven's Connor Moynihan (37-2) and in the finals, against Hartland's Mitchell Thomas (55-1).

Any other state champions? This one is tough. It's hard to gauge who might make a run at a title. Gonzales (135, D2) and Bade (135, D1) return as state champions, but each have been vulnerable at times and are wrestling in extremely tough weights. Gonzales will have to battle nationally-ranked Logan Massa of St. Johns in the finals. And that's only if he can get by teammate Mason Cleaver in the semis. Cleaver, himself, was a state runner-up last year. As for Bade, he enters with a 36-7 record (take into consideration CC's rugged schedule against national powers this season). Because of the way the state draw is set up, he's set to face Davison's Justin Oliver (12-1) in the semifinals. Oliver is a returning state champion himself. Rochester's Josh Wood is on a mission. But like everyone else on this list, he's in a very competitive bracket. He's ranked No. 1 at 125, but will most likely have to face off with a defending state champion in the semifinals - Howell's Ben Calandrino (or Temperance Bedford's Mitch Pawlak, whom Wood beat 12-11 in last week's team state quarterfinals). Malik Amine (140), Logan Marcicki (160) and Bob Coe (285) of CC are all ranked No. 1 at their weights. Amine did reach the finals last year. If he wins his first two matches, he'll most likely face Rochester's Kaelan Richards (#2) in the semifinals. If one of them makes it through to the finals, they'll be the favorite. Marcicki is a former state champion, so he knows what it takes. He's got a clear road to the semis, where I see him wrestling Rochester's Dean Vettese. The winner would probably get either Davison's Jordan Cooks, or perhaps Grand Haven's Dakota Juarez. Coe's biggest obstacle is in the semifinal, in the form of Holland West-Ottawa's Miguel Correa - the No. 2-ranked heavyweight. And Rochester's Shawn Shadaia, ranked No. 1 at 189, will probably have to get by BC Lakeview's Rodney Harvey in the semifinal. But he's got a legit chance at winning it all. Lamphere's Andrew Gorman (51-2) is ranked No. 1 at 112 pounds in Division 2. He's in a balanced draw and has the potential to be wrestling both Friday, and Saturday night.

One to watch: Unbeaten record or not, watch out for Brother Rice's Shon Powell (160). He'll likely face Juarez (41-0) in the second round Friday morning. That would be a great match, one in which I'm sure Juarez is not looking forward to.

Below is a list of all Oakland County wrestlers competing at The Palace this weekend. To track each of them, go to our Live Update page on MIPrepZone all weekend long.

Are the big boys back?

I know it's early, but so far, Catholic Central and Cranbrook look to be in peak condition in these playoffs. They're playing well, and that did not start this past Monday. The two have been tearing things up for the past few weeks.
Since falling to Division 2 #1 Livonia Stevenson (1-0) to begin the month, Catholic Central is 6-1, having outscored its opponents 33-8. And those opponents included the likes of Grosse Pointe North, Notre Dame Academy (WI), Upper Canada College, Hills Academy (Toronto) and Liggett.
I picked the Shamrocks to fall to Brother Rice - its opponent Saturday night. I'll stick to my pick, but CC has me wondering now. Having been bounced from the playoffs early the past two years, the Shamrocks are hungry.
And in Division 3, the same could be said for Cranbrook, which hasn't won a state title since 2010. I was out at Wallace Arena on Tuesday doing a video feature and looked up in the rafters at the 15 state championship banners. I was talking to some of the players. After losing to Marysville 2-1 in overtime in last year's regional final, they're focused to not let that happen again this Saturday.
And it won't.
  • Troy beat Athens Wednesday night. Big win over its biggest rival. Now it's set to play its toughest opponent of the year Saturday. The Colts await the winner of Thursday's Grosse Pointe North-U-D Jesuit game. I'm hoping the team is feeling good about itself, and knows how to use the home ice to its advantage. Because whoever it faces - be it the Norsemen or the Cubs - it's going to have its hands full.
  • Stoney Creek is in a similar boat. The Cougars are facing a stiff challenge in Grosse Pointe South. They've been playing some pretty good hockey of late. And they'll need to keep it up against the Blue Devils, a state semifinalist last year. For anyone wanting to catch an early regional final, that game will be played Saturday at 4:15 at Great Lakes Sports City in Fraser.
  • Coming off an emotional win over Clarkston on Tuesday, I'm wondering if there will be a letdown by Lake Orion Thursday night against Grand Blanc. Not to say Grand Blanc is a slouch. It's won 15 games this year. But Tuesday's win was one of the few highlights the Dragons have had this season. I'm sure they'd love to keep things going. But Thursday's pre-regional final should be a good one.
  • I've seen some upsets in the state tournament over the past could years. And I think it's safe to say that if Milford somehow finds a way past Hartland Thursday night, it would fall into that category. The Eagles beat the Mavericks 6-2 back in December. A lot of time has passed since that game, but it doesn't seem like Hartland has lost a step.
  • Evidently Monday's five-overtime thriller didn't take too much out of Walled Lake Northern. The Knights put a whooping on Walled Lake Western Wednesday night, 7-2. I wish I knew more detail than that, but we didn't get a call tonight.
  • Royal Oak and West Bloomfield both picked up wins Wednesday night, the Ravens need OT to bump off Warren-Mott. That leaves the OAA White foes left to battle it out for a regional title Saturday at the DSC. The two teams split their regular-season series. The Ravens won, 5-4, back in December. The Lakers beat Royal Oak, 6-1, just two weeks ago. J.J. Bloom scored twice and assisted on two others in that game. WB peppered Royal Oak goalie Max Benoit with 51 shots in that game. Which Raven team will show up Saturday?
  • And finally, I will be heading out to Farmington Hills Thursday night to see Country Day take on Farmington. Should be a good one. When I typed up my predictions, I based this one on how hot the Falcons were playing (8-1 in their last nine). But coming off a 7-2 win over Shrine on Tuesday, DCD is looking awfully good.
