Here are my 2015 boys tennis finals predictions

Time is running short, so I'm going to scale back this fall. Here are my predictions on each of the four divisions - Top 10 teams and flight finalists. Good luck to all this weekend.

DIVISION 1
Novi 30, Ann Arbor Pioneer 25, Bloomfield Hills 22, Ann Arbor Huron 22, Troy 20, Northville 18, Brother Rice 14, Grosse Pointe South 13, Port Huron Northern 10, Clarkston 9, Grandville 5, Traverse City Central 4, Eisenhower 3, Midland 2, Grand Blanc 2, Troy Athens 1, Holt 1, Livonia Churchill 1, Rockford 1, Caledonia 1, Kalamazoo Central 1, Utica 0

Flight Finalists
1S  — Connor Johnston (Northville) d. Koushik Kondapi (Novi)
2S  — Alex Wen (Novi) d. Chris Adams (PHN)
3S  —  Constantine Hemmrich (Bloomfield Hills) d. Sid Amarnath (Novi)
4S  —  Brad Silverman (Bloomfield Hills) d. Henry Fuchs (AAP)
1D  —  Maxx Anderson-Daniel Yu (Novi) d. John Sullivan-Nick Costakis (GPS)
2D  —  Aditya Chitta-Robert Chen (Novi) d. Austin Choi-Robert Dong (AAH)
3D  —  Gabe Kleer-Josh Lee (AAP) d. Michael Song-Spencer Liu (Troy)
4D  — Matt Kelley-Henry Zhou (AAH) d. Nikhil Kaila-Grant McLean (AAP)

My thoughts
It took Novi a long, long time to get its first tennis state championship. It may take just one year to get #2. The Wildcats certainly earned their great seeds with solid wins over Troy, Ann Arbor Pioneer and Bloomfield Hills. Getting good seeds can mean all the difference. Bloomfield Hills was seeded top-four in all four singles and picked up another two seeds in doubles. Troy has seven seeds, but none higher than a 4-seed. The Colts will have to overachieve to finish in the top three.

DIVISION 2
Portage Central 31, Midland Dow 26, Forest Hills Central 26, U-D Jesuit 20, Seaholm 19, Groves 18, Forest Hills Northern 17, Okemos 15, North Farmington 8, Grosse Pointe North 6, Wyandotte-Roosevelt 5, Holly 3, East Lansing 3, Walled Lake Western 2, Riverview Gabriel Richard 2, Gibraltar Carlson 1, Farmington Hills Harrison 1, Lakeview 1, Warren Cousino 0, Zeeland East 0, Temperance Bedford 0, Port Huron 0

Flight Finalists
1S  — Bill Duo (Portage Central) d. Connor Genschaw (FHC)
2S  — Michael Szabo (Midland Dow) d. Ben Orwin (Portage Central)
3S  — Tyler Conrad (Midland Dow) d. Michael Caserio (U-D Jesuit)
4S  — Jacob Wiltjer (FHC) d. Aditya Middha (Midland Dow)
1D  — Louis Wyre (U-D Jesuit) d. Kento Hirakawa-Cameron Raedy (Portage Central)
2D  — Andrew Latessa-Will Geller (Seaholm) d. Joey Liu-Sahil Tandon (Portage Central)
3D  — Brian McHale-Josh Belfer (FHN) d. Elijah Lentz-Cody Lewis (Portage Central)
4D  — Peyton Herbert-Mike Battiste (FHC) d. Kyle Wang-Andrew Beering (Portage Central)

My thoughts
It's been 7 years since Portage Central last won a state title (2007). I don't see any reason why the Mustangs won't win another on Saturday. The seeds favor them in a big way. Midland Dow has a great singles lineup, and both Forest Hills Central and Northern have rock-solid doubles lineups. But no one is more complete than PC. I think U-D Jesuit can make a splash here and there (3-singles and 1-doubles) and Seaholm's Andrew Latessa and Will Geller are on the verge of capping off a spectacular season at 2-doubles.

DIVISION 3
Cranbrook 39, Country Day 33, Holland Christian 23, East Grand Rapids 15, Coldwater 13, Haslett 13, St. Joseph 12, Allegan 11, Forest Hills Eastern 11, Hamilton 9, Parma Western 6, Petoskey 6, Trenton 5, Charlotte 5, Chelsea 4, St. Clair 3, Coopersville 2, Armada 1, Cadillac 0, Yale 0, Grand Rapids Christian 0, Hudsonville Unity Christian 0

Flight Finalists
1S  — Marc Sable (CK) d. Noah Karoub (DCD)
2S  — Benji Jacobson (CK) d. Jakob Gahn (DCD)
3S  — Michael Khaghany (DCD) d. Michael Bian (CK)
4S  — Justin Luo (CK) d. Alex Mettler (DCD)
1D  — Nolan Trepeck-Matthew Gerard (CK) d. Damian Runkle-Adams Junn (DCD)
2D  — Chase Ghesquiere-Steven Meng (CK) d. Ryan Murakawa-Ricky Warnicke (DCD)
3D  — Brandon Kerr-Colin Petzold (CK) d. Kavon Rahmani-Joe Zhang (DCD)
4D  — Andrew Du-Jacob Yellen (CK) d. Millind Rao-Anirudh Chitale (DCD)

My thoughts
After four years atop the Division 3 world, it's time for Detroit Country Day to step aside. Cranbrook is back and will win its 19th boys state tennis title. Its doubles, and singles, lineups are the best in the state - all divisions. Sable and Jacobson are a lethal combination at 1-2 singles. And the 1-2 doubles teams may be even better for the Cranes. Novi is going for its second straight state title in Division 1, and should get it. And this Cranbrook team handled Novi, fairly easy, 6-2. There's no doubt that DCD is the second best team in the state - and it will prove that as well.

Keep those tennis calls coming ...

Seaholm seniors Jackie Meier (left) and Labina
Petrovska pose with the runner-up trophy at
the Midland Dow Quad.
So far, the weather's wreaked a little havoc on the tennis season. But it is getting better. Had a chance to get out to a few tennis matches and shoot some photo galleries. They've been a big hit for us here at The Oakland Press and MIPrepZone.
We used to be able to provide a simple tennis box score in the newspaper. Those days are over. Shrinking paper sizes have forced us online. But, the good part is that we can provide a lot more there. Those same box scores will still be there. But now we're able to provide some short writeups and a ton of photos. An example of the photos slideshows include: Feature on Clarkston's Olsen twins; West Bloomfield vs. Troy; feature on Marian's Dadabbo; Clarkston vs. Seaholm; season preview on Cranbrook; 2014 top teams and players; 2014 team capsules; Bloomfield Hills vs. Marian; Holly vs. Brandon; various Clawson, Lamphere photos; and the Marian Quad.

Keep calling us
Coaches, we do appreciate the calls or emails we've been receiving. But we can do better. Every player should be recognized . So please, I implore you, let's try to get more results sent into us here at The Oakland Press. The OAA Red is doing a good job. But we're hit and miss with the OAA White, OAA Blue, KLAA and Catholic League teams. Call (248) 745-4775 after matches or email your results into us at prepsports@oakpress.com. Make sure to speak slow. Some names are difficult for us to spell.

Seaholm a close second at Midland Dow Quad
The Maples made their way up to the thumb to take on some good competition earlier this week. Host Midland Dow won the quad with 17 points, followed closely by Seaholm (16) and Traverse City Central (15). Senior Labina Petrovska was unbeaten (3-0) at No. 1 singles for Seaholm. Also finishing 3-0 were the 3-4 doubles teams of Emily McDermott and Meaghan Flynn and Sophie Dixon and Lisa Johnston.

Feeling the Red, White and Blue

Rochester's boys tennis team.
The drought(s) are over
Unbeknownst to me, the two best teams in the OAA White snapped extensive league championship droughts on Thursday. I don't have a list of OAA league champions (in any of the three divisions) in front of me, but you'd have had a hard time getting me to believe it had been 12 years since Clarkston had last won a league championship - or 32 for Rochester.
Both of those winless streaks ended as the two teams split the OAA White title - Clarkston winning the regular-season portion, while Rochester took home the tourney title yesterday. Two good teams, both deserving of what they earned this season.
Clarkston dominated singles play in both the regular season and the tournament, while Rochester handled its business in doubles. Two key turning points on Thursday were at 1-singles and 2-doubles, where Rochester avenged losses to the Wolves - from their league match. Nicholas Ang proved the third time was the charm, as he finally beat Alex Matisse to win the No. 1 singles championship. Matt Randall and Scott Schlagel - who lost to Clarkston's Brendan Greenlee and Mitch Rogowski a few weeks back - came through in the 2-doubles final Thursday.
I don't necessarily want to get into regional talk, just yet, but these two teams will certainly have their work cut out for themselves at next week's Division 1 regional tournament at Clarkston. Those two, along with Rochester Adams, Bloomfield Hills and West Bloomfield will all battle it out for a chance to get to the state tournament. I had a talk with a couple coaches Thursday, regarding the stacked draw at Clarkston. It's unfortunate that so many quality teams will have to beat each other up and a few miss out on qualifying for states. Hopefully this is a one-year thing and the MHSAA will wise up and split this region up.

Troy once again tops 'em all in the Red
For the third-straight year, Troy High took home the OAA Red championship. Two years ago the Colts edged out Andover for the title. Last year, Troy beat out Rochester Adams. That was the case again on Tuesday. The Colts won all their first-round matches and had five flights reach the finals. Sachin Ketkar and Vincent Thieu (2-dubs) and Kevin Fietsam and Mark Elinski (4-dubs) came away winners. Congrats to Troy. And a big congrats must go out to Troy Athens' Richard Zhang, who beat Adams' Justin Hyman in three sets to take home the No. 1 singles title. That's a big win in a match between two players who certainly deserve seeds at the state tournament. We'll see if that match plays a part when the seeds are figured out in a few weeks.

Avondale best in the Blue
Auburn Hills Avondale and Farmington Hills Harrison ran away from the field Tuesday, with the Yellow Jackets proving to have just too much talent. Avondale won six of the eight flight championships. Harrison won one flight, as did Southfield-Lathrup. That came from Donovan Luttrell, who won his second-straight league title at No. 1 singles. He joined former Charger, Edwin Peart, as the last two players to win back-to-back titles at the top flight.

Holly still the king of the FML
Holly won another FML title on Tuesday.
Talking about dominance. Try Holly's performance at Tuesday's Flint Metro League on for size. The Bronchos scored 45 out of a possible 48 points, claiming six flight championships while finishing runner-up and third place in the other two.
Jeff Sophiea (first) and Will Moller (fourth) both won singles titles, while the doubles lineup swept.  Craig Richards and Parker Rowse, Parker Cuthbert and Taylor Mills, Dillon Sink and Zac Goodrich and Aaron Vergith and Morgan Baylis all won in straight sets in their finals matches. Sophiea's win was his first in four finals appearances at No. 1 singles. The victory - coupled with older brother and coach Will Sophiea's FML title - made them the first siblings to win league No. 1 singles titles.

Catholic League and KLAA up next
The Catholic League Tournament will be held Saturday - hosted by Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Avondale High School will be a second site for the tournament. Brother Rice will be the overwhelming favorite to win another league title. The field is loaded, with Detroit U-D Jesuit, Catholic Central, De La Salle and Notre Dame Prep all competing.
The KLAA Association tournaments, both the upper and lower tiers, will also take place Saturday. The upper tier tournament will be held at Novi (Middle School). Novi and Northville will once again be the favorites. The top three teams in each of the four divisions will be at Novi. The Wildcats won the Central Division, while Grand Blanc (West), Plymouth (South) and Walled Lake Western, Walled Lake Northern and Walled Lake Central (all 4-1 in the North) enter the tournament as division champions. Also competing at Novi will be Canton, Livonia Franklin, Northville, Livonia Stevenson, Brighton and Howell.
Waterford Mott, Waterford Kettering, Lakeland, South Lyon, South Lyon East and Milford will be among the Oakland County teams participating in the lower-tiered tournament, being held at Canton.
