Some great hockey action on tap for Wednesday night

Last weekend saw a ton of great hockey action. I had a chance to see Lake Orion and Rochester United play to a 2-2 tie Friday night. The Dragons had a chance to claim a share of the OAA Red title, with a win. The next night, Clarkston played the spoiler, beating Lake Orion 4-0 and putting any sort of OAA Red title on hold for the Dragons.
Now, Lake Orion - which finished 4-1-1 in league play - must sit and watch things play out. Rochester United (2-0-2) travels to Berkley tonight to take on the Bears (3-1-1). If Berkley wins, it will win a share of the title - with the Dragons. But if Rochester wins, it'll set itself up for a chance to win the title outright - with a win over Farmington Hills Unified (Feb. 19) in its regular-season league finale.
I'll be at the game. Follow me @JasonESchmitt on Twitter for updates.

OAA White hotly contested, too
Our Tom Watts will be out at Troy tonight to cover the Colts game against Royal Oak. Five teams are separated by three points in the OAA White. Troy Athens (5-1-2) sits in first place with 12 points. Troy (5-1) and Avondale (5-3) each have 10, followed by Birmingham Unified (4-3-1) and Royal Oak (4-3-1) with nine each. With two games in hand, the Colts have the slight edge and a win tonight would be big. Same thing for Royal Oak. The Ravens would do the entire league a favor with a win over Troy.
Birmingham and Avondale are also playing tonight. Michael Wallwork will be covering it for us. Two big points up for grabs there.

Big MIHL matchup tonight
Brother Rice travels to Orchard Lake St. Mary's tonight. Might seem a little premature to call any game a must-win (in late January), but the Eaglets must win tonight if they want any chance at catching Cranbrook in the MIHL standings. The Cranes are a perfect 8-0 in league play. St. Mary's is 6-3-1-1. That's just two points back, but the Eaglets have played three more games. The Warriors are 4-1-1 in their last six games, but are coming off a 4-2 loss to U-D Jesuit last Friday.
We'll be out at this game, too.

Check back on MIPrepZone for all the game stories tonight.

Hockey never stops - Tis the season

Now I haven't had the chance to get down to Detroit this week for the Winter Festival games being played at Comerica Field. Our reporters, Jeff Dullack, Ben Szilagy and Dan Tallant have really stepped it up and were down covering games Monday afternoon (Rochester 5, Stoney Creek 4), Wednesday night (Lake Orion 7, Clarkston 2) and Thursday afternoon (Cranbrook 4, Brother Rice 3).
Our sister MIPrepZone site (in St. Clair) covered the Utica Eisenhower-Country Day game for us as well. So all the game stories will be up on MIPrepZone by Thursday night - some already are.

Upcoming events and happenings

The holiday break is upon us, but that doesn't mean hockey teams take a break. At least not all of them. Some will be busy playing regular-season and and in holiday tournaments over the next two weeks. Here are some of the highlights:
  • Stoney Creek will host Lake Orion Saturday night (6 p.m.) at the Onyx in a game that will double as a canned food drive. Bring a canned food item to the game, get in free. What a great way to make a difference and watch what should be a great hockey game.
  • Rochester United and Stoney Creek have invited Livonia Churchill and Utica Eisenhower up for their annual showcase later this month. On Friday, Dec. 27, Rochester will face Ike and Stoney will take on Churchill. Then, on Saturday, they'll flip, with Stoney facing Ike and the United squad taking on Churchill.
  • After the new year, Berkley will host its own invitational, welcoming in Royal Oak, Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak Shrine, Marysville and Port Huron. Pool play games will be held at the Berkley Ice Arena on Thursday (Jan. 2), Friday (Jan. 3) and Saturday (Jan. 4), with the championship, consolation and 5th-6th place game being played on Monday (Jan. 6). Marysville, Shrine and Bloomfield Hills are in Pool A, while the hosts, Royal Oak and Port Huron are in Pool B.
Also, if you didn't catch my hockey preview - which a short version ran in print Sunday and online Tuesday night - you can read all of it HERE. Thanks for everyone's help this year.
We are also covering more hockey than we have ever before. Everyone knows Mike Wallwork and his relentless mission to see every team in Oakland County each season. He's already covered a ton of games and plans on seeing many, many more. Jeff Dullack, Ben Szilagy and Dan Tallant have also stepped up their games. Add myself into the mix and you're going to see a ton of coverage this season. Games we have covered so far this season are below.
