Regional roundup - Moving on to states
- I have to give Country Day a shout out for sweeping its regional. The Yellowjackets won in straight sets at seven flights before gathering to cheer on senior Max Shanbrom, who beat Cranbrook's Nithin Davuluri in three tough sets at No. 4 singles. Country Day will now take its talents to Holland, where it'll not only look to win its second-straight state tennis title, but do so in impressive fashion.
- Both Troy and Brother Rice were also heavily favored in their regions and they did not disappoint. Rice won seven of eight flights - all in which it was seeded No. 1 - and scored 30 team points at the Rochester regional. All four of its doubles teams (Blake Hildebrand-Gavin McNulty, George Hamaty-Connor Parks, Joey Hildebrand-Johnny Cameron and David Weatherford-Brendan Dillon) walked away champions, without dropping a set. Coach Kurt Zaske will need these eight to play their best this weekend in Midland, at least if the Warriors want a chance to win a state title.
Troy won six of eight flights over at Grosse Pointe South. The Colts were pretty balanced, winning three of four singles, and doubles flights. Senior Brett Forman beat Athens Richard Zhang 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. He seems to be playing the best tennis of the season at just the right time. It was also nice to see Athens earn its way up to Midland, a year after falling a point short. Zhang, Eric Flewelling, Jason Potter and Sheevam Naik all reached the regional final at 1-4 singles, with Naik winning his flight championship. - Over at Novi, I had the chance to see three of what will be of the top seeds at the Division 1 tournament this weekend. Northville's Tyler Gardiner topped a talented No. 1 singles field that also included Novi's Tim Wang, Catholic Central's Michael Dube' and Lakeland's Alex Kim.
Gardiner will be the top seed in Midland, Wang will lead what could be the favorite team in Midland and Dube' will make his third-straight trip to the finals, as Catholic Central, buoyed by a great performance by No. 2 Michael Trupiano, had a great showing Friday. - I mentioned before the regionals began that I felt Seaholm had a chance
to pull even with Groves at Thursday's Division 2 tournament at Groves.
Not only did the Maples catch the Falcons, they passed them by, winning
five flight championships. Alex Tropea at No. 4 singles, along with the
1-4 doubles teams of Jason Mondry-Ben McDermott, Zach Tayler-Griffen
Neal, Aaron Rosen-Brendan Knight and Alex Cross-Will Geller all won
titles. Rosen and Knight, and Cross and Geller, lost their
regular-season matches to their Groves' counterparts. But both teams won
tight, three-setters this time around.
One of the more feel-good stories from this past week's regionals is that Berkley also qualified out for the Division 2 state tournament. The Bears reached at least the semifinals in all flights, and two made it to the finals. Sam Subia fell to Tropea at No. 4 singles, while Jason Sachse and Jim Demery fell to Mondry and McDermott at No. 1 doubles. Congratulations to coach Lenny Waldman and his Bears. - Seaholm, Groves and Berkley aren't the only Oakland County teams making the trip to Holly/Fenton. Andover, Lahser and North Farmington qualified out of the North Farmington region, and Ortonville-Brandon will make the short trip up the road to join host Holly, which won the Fenton regional. That makes eight county teams competing in Division 2, of 18 total. Not too bad.
